“Less Waste, More Growth: Boosting Energy Productivity” is a report published by 14 organizations in the United Kingdom, pointed to great waste in energy. According to a story about the report at the Association for Decentralised Energy, the loss of energy averages £354 per household and more than half of a household’s average annual electrical bill of £592. The waste is the equivalent of 37 nuclear power plants, a bioenergy field the size of England or wind turbines covering 40 percent of Scotland.
The report offers several suggestions, including an effort to improve on a year-by year basis, a revised energy tax system for businesses and a solutions-based approach in which the demand side and the supply side compete on equal footing.
Some efforts to reduce the waste are underway. Lexology describes a new law – Regulations 2015 – that will impose new standards for privately rented properties in England and Wales beginning on April 1, 2018. At that point, landlords will be unable to renew leases that fall below the Energy Performance Certification rating of “E.” Tenants living in properties rated “F’ or “G” have the right to request consent from the landlord to allow them to carry out efficiency measures starting on April 1, 2016.
