Refurbished Air Coils Save Energy for Four Seasons Hotel

AirRevive, a Florida commercial air conditioning refurbishment and re-commissioning company, developed a custom fan coil unit upgrade service that the company says reduces direct energy use by up to 80 percent and eliminates the need for replacement coils.

The service combines custom fan coil refurbishment to address the unit’s deficiencies with retrofitting high efficiency electronic commutation (EC) motors.

An AirRevive case study of a project it conducted at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia shows that the EC motor’s performance is not maximized when retrofit into a unit with an uncleaned coil. The study compared the same hotel guestroom fan coil unit’s performance under three different conditions:

  1. Fan coil unit with PSC motor and uncleaned coil.
  2. An EC motor retrofit into the unit with uncleaned coil.
  3. EC motor retrofit after coil was refurbished by AirRevive.

The retrofit into the refurbished unit resulted in an additional 38 percent reduction in energy.

AirRevive says the impact goes beyond energy savings. The property avoids discarding air coil units by refurbishing and re-commissioning them instead of trashing them. Since the unit is never removed, potential soiling and contamination is also avoided, minimizing waste.

AirRevive has used its technology at hotel properties under the flags of Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Sheraton, W Hotels and Westin.
