Progress Energy Carolinas has selected Vogt Power International to supply custom-designed heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for the company's Lee and Sutton combined cycle power plants in North Carolina.
Vogt Power will design, manufacture and deliver three HRSGs with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to the H. F. Lee Energy Complex in Goldsboro and two HRSGs to the Sutton Energy Complex in Wilmington.
The SCR systems will help the plant meet strict state emissions guidelines by reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx). The equipment also includes CO systems for the removal of carbon monoxide.
Siemens Energy will supply five gas turbine-generator packages that will operate with the HRSGs. These gas-turbine packages include a SGT6-5000F gas turbine with a rated capacity of 206MW, an air-cooled generator and a SPPA-T3000 plant control system, reports Trading Markets.
Progress Energy recently announced the retirement of 11 coal-fired units that lack air-emissions control equipment at four sites in North Carolina. By switching from coal to natural gas, the company expects a 40 to 50 percent drop in carbon dioxide emissions, a 95 percent reduction in nitrogen-oxide emissions, and near elimination of sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions.
In addition, both Progress Energy and Duke Energy are on track to meet North Carolina's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard that requires electric utilities to obtain 12.5 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2021, reports Triangle Business Journal.
In 2010, utilities must get 0.02 percent of their electricity from solar energy, which both Progress and Duke have met, according to the newspaper. The next solar benchmark is in 2018.
Progress Energy Carolinas recently agreed to purchase power from eight start-up solar projects, while solar developers in North Carolina accuse Duke of stifling growth in the local solar industry.
