PowerCell Aims to Cut Grocery Distributor’s CO2 Emissions 90%

ASKOSwedish fuel cell company PowerCell has partnered with Norway’s largest grocery distributor ASKO to reduce diesel consumption for electricity generation during loading and unloading at ASKO’s deliveries of up to 90 percent.

Other project partners include mobile refrigeration technology provider ThermoKing Norge and the research institute SINTEF. The project is called the Distrocell project.

The pilot showed that using PowerCell’s PowerPac for transportation reduced CO2 emissions up to 90 percent, and almost eliminated emissions of CO, NOx, VOCs1 and PM102, PowerCell says.

ASKO has set a goal to be carbon neutral in its energy use by 2020. It also plans to run half of its vehicles on renewable fuels.

The company has 600 distribution vehicles on the road every day, so phasing PowerPac into the fleet will play a major role in reducing emissions, says ASKO’s Jørn A. Endresen.

PowerCell is also leading a project to convert toxic waste from olive oil production into electricity.
