The global postal industry targets a 20 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020, based on 2008 levels, reports the International Post Corporation (IPC). IPC, an association of 24-member postal operators in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region, says the postal industry is the first services sector to set global emissions reductions.

The postal industry's first combined report, "IPC Postal Sector Sustainability Report on the Environment" (PDF), is based on data collected from twenty postal operators, which represent 80 percent of global mail volumes. The postal operators used the IPC Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System, which was developed specifically for the industry.

The 20 postal operators that contributed to the Sustainability Report emit 8.36 million tons of CO2. The group targets a reduction in CO2 emissions by 6.688 million tons by 2020. IPC members manage more than 100,000 facilities and 600,000 transport vehicles.

The 20 post operators who took part in the EMMS report are: An Post, Ireland; Australia Post; Canada Post; Correios de Portugal; Correos y Telegrafos, Spain; Deutsche Post, Germany; Groupe La Poste, France; Hellenic Post, Greece; Itella Post, Finland; La Poste/De Post, Belgium; Magyar Posta, Hungary; New Zealand Post; Norway Post; Posten Norden AB, Denmark and Sweden; Postes et Telecommunications Luxembourg; Royal Mail, United Kingdom; Swiss Post; TNT, The Netherlands; and the United States Postal Service.
