A Drexel University study found that buildings are by far the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The report, which was commissioned by the Mayor's Office of Sustainability, found that buildings created 60 percent of emissions. Motor vehicles were a distant second place at 19 percent in the study.
The city is trying to figure out how to comply with a national initiative to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. Suggestions made in the report include wall insulation, double-pane windows, roof insulation, white roofs, motion-sensor controlled lighting and electric heat pumps, according to the story.
They aren’t as big as Philadelphia, but five Massachusetts communities are doing their part to be energy efficient and otherwise environmentally aware. National Grid said that it is recognizing the communities – Chelmsford, Malden, Newburyport, Shirley and Salisbury – for exceeding the goals set in its Community Initiative program.
