California Gov. Jerry Brown yesterday announced an executive order establishing the most ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target in North America — a goal to reduce emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030.
PG&E said it applauds the new goal and says it is attainable “with the right structures.”
The utility notes that in 2013, California’s electric sector emissions rate was half the national average. PG&E says future greenhouse gas policy should encourage cross-sector reductions and recognize that not all sectors and businesses are starting from the same point.
NV Energy, Xcel, PG&E, Sempra and Edison International rank the highest for renewable energy sales, with renewable resources accounting for nearly 17 to 21 percent of their retail electricity sales in 2012, according to a 2014 report from Ceres and Clean Edge that ranks the US’ largest electric utilities and their local subsidiaries on their renewable energy sales and energy efficiency savings
