The EPA and Perdue Farms joined forces to prevent runoff from poultry farming from entering U.S. waters in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions, thus protecting water quality and plant and fish life.
Perdue had created a clean waters environmental initiative to give training, assessments, and assistance to help contract growers control runoff and manage litter disposal, therefore reducing the environmental impacts of the industry.
That program, which began as a pilot program on the Delmarva Peninsula in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, will become a full-fledged environmental management program that applies to all the regional Perdue producers and will last four years.
The initiative will also include an awards program to recognize poultry farms that demonstrate environmental excellence in protecting and restoring waterways.
