The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) is encouraging electricity customers to shop for retail electricity. Statewide, 36 percent of customers participate in retail choice programs. This is more heavily weighted toward large commercial and industrial users, as competitive suppliers serve 64 percent of the state’s total load. Although the eastern part of the state has seen an uptick in participation, the western part has experienced falling participation rates.
The state offers an energy shopping website, PAPowerSwitch, to help customers identify and compare available energy products. A February article on Retail Energy Buyer provides guidance on best practices for using shopping websites. PAPowerSwitch, which was recently upgraded, also provides a variety of resources to help educate customers about how to buy retail energy.
