ODVA, the body that defines standards for computer networks, has announced an energy object that it says makes it easier to get energy use information on networked devices.
The energy object forms part of updates to the specifications governing the four types of networks under ODVA's remit: EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet and ControlNet. The object allows manufacturers to aggregate and view energy usage at various levels of their enterprises in an "energy usage tree," ODVA says.
Its energy reporting methodology meets standards defined by the sustainability reporting framework produced by Global Reporting Initiative, ODVA says.

In November, software company BuildingIQ launched ManagerIQ, the latest in its line of predictive energy optimization products.
The cloud-based software enables the remote configuration, monitoring, and management of the BuildingIQ suite of energy applications for facilities, campus, and real estate portfolio owners, according to Building IQ. It is bundled with the deployment of any application from the BuildingIQ product suite.
