The Obama administration today rejected the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.
Despite the US Senate and House of Representatives votes to approve the 1,179-mile oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, secretary of state John Kerry determined the controversial pipeline is not in the best interest of the US. He said the “critical factor in my determination was this: moving forward with this project would significantly undermine our ability to continue leading the world in combating climate change.”
Additionally, the Keystone XL pipeline, if built, would have a negligible impact on US energy security and would not lead to lower gas prices for American consumers, Kerry said.
President Barack Obama agreed with Kerry’s determination.
“America is now a global leader when it comes to taking serious action to fight climate change, and frankly approving this project would have undercut that leadership,” Obama told reporters at the White House.
