New York City has announced a plan to reduce its waste disposal by 90 percent by 2030 and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, both compared to 2005 levels.
The environmental goals are part of mayor Bill de Blasio’s OneNYC plan to improve the city’s social, economic and environmental sustainability.
The plan also targets zero waste to landfill by 2030 and says New York will achieve these waste management goals by offering single-stream recycling by 2020 and reducing the use of plastic bags and other non-compostable waste.
