Higher Ground Allendale, a nonprofit organization focused on improving mental health and wellbeing through gardening, environmental engagement, and skill-building, serves as a cornerstone of community life. Its center hosts coffee mornings, music events, and workshops designed to foster inclusion and connection across generations.
The donation from Northumbrian Water will fund the installation of secondary glazing at the Allendale center. This improvement is expected to significantly reduce heating costs during colder months by improving insulation, while allowing the panels to be removed in summer to maintain indoor comfort.
The contribution aligns with Northumbrian Water’s broader sustainability strategy and follows the company’s recent £5.3 million ($7 million) upgrade of the Allendale sewage treatment works. That project enhanced water quality in the River East Allen and nearby watercourses, while strengthening the efficiency and resilience of wastewater services across the region.
“We’re proud to support Higher Ground Allendale and the incredible work they do for the community,” said Jonny Shaw, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water. “By helping improve the energy efficiency of their center, we’re not only supporting their sustainability goals but also contributing to a space that brings people together and promotes wellbeing.”
Over the past decade, Higher Ground Allendale has built a lasting impact through its mental health and horticulture initiatives. The organization now helps volunteers gain transferable skills to support career pathways in gardening, land management, and related green industries.
“This donation means a great deal to us,” said Jane Coulson, Project Manager at Higher Ground Allendale. “It will help make our center more comfortable and cost-effective to run, allowing us to focus on what matters most—supporting people’s mental health and helping them grow through connection with nature and community.”
