nokia_weoffset.jpgIn a recent interview with Crunch Gear, Kirsi Sormunen, head of environmental affairs at Nokia, said that the company has spent more than a decade making environmental decision-making an integral part of the business process.

Scott Merrill of Crunch Gear writes that recycling was a big part of Nokia World 2008, where USB sticks in media kits all read “I am made of recycled plastic,” or “I used to be ... car parts.”

Since reducing the size of product packaging, Sormunen says it has cut paper usage by 100 tons, taken 12,000 trucks off the road and saved €470 million (approximately $610 million).

Nokia is also a member of the Eco-Patent Commons, along with companies like Bosch, Dupont, and IBM.

The company also offers the we:offset application for all Nokia S60 phones. It's a personal carbon offset application that calculates the amount of carbon is used when it detects location change. It also offers the opportunity to purchase carbon offsets.
