Nike Signs Third PPA With Spanish Utility Iberdrola

Posted

Spanish multinational utility Iberdrola has signed a power purchase agreement with Nike to supply the sporting brand with clean energy. The deal allows Iberdrola to power facilities owned by Nike in Europe with clean energy generated from wind farms in Navarra, Spain.

The deal further facilitates the supply of 40MW of energy and builds from three successful power purchase deals signed by the two in the US. The deal also increases Nike’s renewable wind capacity to 200MW, in line with the firm's efforts to adopt sustainable business practices.

The deal is the third for the two companies in three years. Nike has also entered into a deal for the supply of clean energy with AvanGrid.

Xabier Viteri, director of Renewables at Iberdrola added, “Large businesses with a focus on sustainability are showing that they can be a positive force in tackling climate change. More and more we are seeing companies set themselves tough carbon reduction goals. There is a strong market in Europe for renewable PPA deals, and we anticipate securing further agreements in a number of countries in the months ahead.”

Iberdrola is managing over 6,000MW of renewable energy projects.
