Adidas and the National Hockey League created new hockey jerseys in partnership with Parley for the Ocean using repurposed and upcycled materials. NHL players are expected to don the new jerseys for All-Star Games this month.

The special edition Adizero Authentic Pro x Parley jerseys are made from Parley Ocean Plastic, which the companies describe as materials made from plastic bottles and other plastic waste intercepted in marine environments.

This plastic waste then gets upcycled into technical polyester fibers that go into performance apparel. The NHL says their best players will be wearing the new jerseys for the 2019 All-Star Weekend hosted by the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on January 25 and 26. In addition, the special edition jerseys will be available for sale online at team stores.

“Each year, the NHL All-Star Weekend serves as an opportunity to showcase innovations across all aspects of our game,” said Brian Jennings, chief branding officer and executive vice president for the league. “This year’s NHL All-Star Game in San Jose is the perfect setting for Adidas to introduce environmentally-conscious jerseys that complement our focus on environmental stewardship.”

Adidas is a founding member of Parley for the Oceans, and the company announced a partnership with the organization in 2015. The sportswear company also made changes in their retail stores aimed at preventing ocean pollution and introduced a concept shoe made from recycled ocean plastic.

In 2018, Adidas launched a hoodie made out of Parley Ocean Plastic yarn and followed it up with a commitment to eliminate the use of virgin plastic for manufacturing by 2024.

Since 2015, Adidas has been the official outfitter of NHL’s on-ice uniforms as well as its licensed apparel and headwear. The league’s environmental initiatives include aiming for lower emissions, conserving water, and reducing waste. Last year AEG and the LA Kings collaborated with BluEco Technology Group to deploy efficient ice technology at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
