It may be more than four months until Christmas, but Nestle already is finding ways to reduce the expected piles of holiday gift waste. The candy maker has eliminated a plastic tray from its holiday gift boxes, making the packaging 100 percent recyclable, reports PackagingNewsUK.
Instead of the plastic presentation tray, Nestle has gone to a cardboard alternative.
The change should save Nestle 200 tons of packaging, when compared to 2007. The medium-size gift box will have a reduced weight of 17 percent, while the large box will have a reduced weight of 20 percent.
The gift boxes will be put together at a co-packing plant that recently was opened between Nestle and IPS, reports PackagingNewsUK.
In the U.S., Nestle has undertaken other initiatives to reduce waste. Working with Keep America Beautiful, Nestle Waters North America is providing $10,000 “Recycle On The Go” grants to 12 Keep America Beautiful affiliates. The projects will benefit a variety of locations, including soccer and baseball complexes, public arenas, public parks and more.
