MeadWestvaco (MWV) is participating in a new pilot program by New York City’s Department of Transportation to roll out a more environmentally friendly form of asphalt, according to a NY1.com report and MeadWestvaco press release.
The DoT is using MWV’s Evotherm warm-mix asphalt, which significantly reduces temperatures at which asphalt pavements are produced and applied, resulting in considerable reductions in fuel consumption and improved environmental impact.
MWV’s Evotherm warm-mix asphalt technology is a next-generation innovation that introduces the potential to reduce carbon emissions associated asphalt paving.
Evotherm’s technology enables asphalt mixes to be produced at temperatures more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit lower than traditional hot-mix asphalt applications. The substantially lower production temperatures provide numerous benefits, including a 60 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, 75 percent reduction in photochemical smog emissions, almost 80 percent drop sulfur dioxide, and 55 percent energy savings.
The DoT plans to study the new asphalt for a year. If it performs up to expectations, the agency plans to use it throughout the city.
