Municipalities Could Combine Small Cell and LED Upgrades

Posted

LEDThe next generation of mobile technology will rely on small cells. These base stations will supplement the familiar macro base stations. The advantages are reuse of spectrum – which is vital as data needs grow – and the ability to fill in dead spots and provide better coverage inside structures.

One of the challenges of the approach is deployment of the sheer number of small cells necessary. At Mobile World Congress last month in Shanghai, Philip Song, Huawei’s small cell marketing director, said that small cells could be deployed as cities upgrade to LED lighting, according to Mobile World Live. Indeed, it is more than a concept: RCR Wireless said that Ericsson exhibited its approach to automated transport networks. One element of such a network is Zero Site, which is the deployment of small cells with LEDs.
