lonestar.jpgInternational's LoneStar truck has received the U.S. EPA's SmartWay certification for its fuel efficiency and emissions reductions, and is the first "classic-styled Class 8" truck to do so, the company announced.

The EPA SmartWay initiative aims to reduce as much as 66 million metric tons of CO2 emissions and up to 200,000 tons of NOx emissions per year by 2012.

SmartWay is a voluntary partnership between freight industry sectors and the EPA that gives companies incentives for fuel efficiency and GHG reductions. SmartWay bases its truck certification on fuel-saving, low-emission equipment specifications for new Class 8 long-haul tractors.

Today's rigs, like the LoneStar, are designed with aerodynamic bumpers, hoods, windshields, external air cleaners, and chassis skirts, which encompass the gasoline tanks. They also often include energy saving auxiliary power units that reduce idling time, and run on ultra low-sulfur diesel.
