By 2020, snack food manufacturer Mondēlez International intends to reduce absolute CO2 emissions from manufacturing by 15 percent against a 2013 baseline. In announcing its 2020 sustainability goals, Mondēlez also said it would begin reporting absolute emissions rather than emissions per metric ton.
The snacking company accomplished its 2015 goals for packaging, greenhouse gas emissions and net waste one year early. In fact, through 2014, it achieved a 57 percent reduction in waste — four times its original goal.
The company plans to reduce water in facilities located in water-scarce regions by 10 percent against a 2013 baseline by reducing absolute incoming water use in manufacturing. Mondēlez also plans to reduce total manufacturing waste by 20 percent compared to 2013, which will include the elimination of 65,000 metric tons of packaging.
Mondēlez aims to source all of its cocoa sustainably, mainly through its Cocoa Life program. It will also maintain its European Harmony wheat program and create a global approach to wheat.
