Data centers increasingly are stressed for power as demands from the Internet – and the PCs, smartphones and other devices connected to them – grow radically. Salt River Project, which is of the nation’s largest public utilities, and BaseLayer have unveiled a prototype of an approach that they say can help satisfy demand as it grows.
The SRP DataStation is a modular data center that bypasses the grid to connect directly to utility infrastructure. The idea is to ensure power without expanding the electric grid, according to The Arizona Republic. The modular data centers are said to be 19 percent more energy efficient traditional data centers. Two data centers have two direct links to power sources. This eliminates the need for batteries and backup power, which can represent 40 percent of data center construction costs. The concept was unveiled this week in Gilbert, AZ.
