The Sustainability Design Lab and Lincoln Laboratory – both part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – and the Boston Redevelopment Authority have developed a model of Boston that a story at PhysOrg says is “of unprecedented scale and spatio-temporal detail.”
The story says that the model estimates gas and electricity demand of almost each building in the city. That’s almost 100,000 for every hour of every day. The information garnered in this way can be used to build energy efficiencies in retrofits and in installation of rooftop photo voltaics, the story said. The value can be in increasing efficiency on an as-needed basis and meeting long-term goals.
In the autumn, UCLA unveiled The L.A. Energy Atlas. It is a free database that combines energy utility data and public records to track energy usage by people and buildings in Los Angeles County.
