Wood varnish and wax manufacturer Minwax announced a new Commitment to Environmental Responsibility initiative. While the announcement doesn't point to specific numbers, the company says it will take steps to minimize its environmental impact by providing a range of products, including those that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Paints, varnishes, and waxes - as well as cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products - all contain VOCs. If the company follows through on the commitment, it could put itself in a good position to serve the green building market. Products that contain lower levels of the solvents help buildings achieve LEED certification by lowering the overall level of emitted gases, especially indoors.
Minwax says it will also use sustainable raw materials in products (e.g., linseed and soya oils) whenever possible. Recycled and recyclable materials will also be utilized in packaging when possible. Metal cans, for instance, could contain up to 25 percent recycled steel and 10 percent post-consumer material.
Minwax also promised to try to reduce waste produced from its manufacturing processes and implement energy-efficient methods in the plants.
