Agreement has been reached for a steam decentralization project at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Utility Energy Services Contract, which was signed in March, is between the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic, the Piedmont Natural Gas Company and Energy Services Group.
There is no upfront cost to the military, according to Energy Services Group. The project is expected to yield greater than $37 million in savings over its 15 year term. It includes design, construction and commissioning of energy upgrades in 37 buildings at Hadnot Point/French Creek, Marine Corps Air Station New River and Courthouse Bay. Boilers, hot water heating systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and water treatment are included.
Forbes at the beginning of this month posted a commentary on steps taken by the U.S. Department of Defense to cut energy use. The goal is to use 3,000 MW from renewables by 2025. That would cut into the estimated annual $4 billion energy bill it now pays.
