Manchester United Football Club was recognized by the Carbon Trust Standard for its efforts in reducing carbon emissions by 10 percent, according to a report in Crain’s Manchester Business. Surpassing its goal of reducing its energy use by 10 percent in two years, the largest football club in the world achieved a  16.9 percent reduction in energy use and became the 250th organization to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard.

According to the report, the club has achieved the reduction through several energy-saving initiatives, such as turning the lights in its stadium off on days when no match is being played and improving the environmental controls in its heating and ventilation system. Cutting the amount of lighting in just one of the stadium’s tunnels is saving the club £10,000 a year. For financial year 2008 - 2009, Manchester United’s carbon management efforts helped the club save over £125,000 in electricity, £110,000 in gas and £235,000 in total energy use in seven months.

Together these efforts have saved 1200 tons of carbon dioxide or CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere – equivalent to the carbon produced by 240 average sized homes within a year.
