container shipAB InBev, AkzoNobel, DSM, FrieslandCampina and Huntsman say they plan to develop a common approach to sustainability in their procurement of ocean freight and selection of carriers.

As well as sharing best practices, all the partners will take an active role in the sustainability dialogue between shippers and carriers. They say they will take steps within their shipping operations to adapt the selection procedures to reflect actual carrier performance on sustainability and their engagement to impact reduction.

The partners will work with Pure Birds, a company that builds demand-driven sustainable innovation networks.

The five companies involved are all members of Ceres’ Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP) coalition, launched in 2008 with a core group of five companies including Starbucks, Nike and Timberland.
