Lufthansa Employees Now Travel CO2 Neutral, Airline Says

When employees of the Lufthansa Group travel by air, that travel is now CO2 neutral, the company says. CO2 emissions for employee air travel will be offset by Swiss climate protection foundation MyClimate.

The Lufthansa Group also announced that it will convert its ground ops services in its home markets Germany, Austria and Switzerland to a CO2-neutral operation by 2030. This includes converting the vehicles to an electric or other emission-free drive and purchasing 100% green electricity at the earliest possible moment. Only green electricity will be used for buildings of the Lufthansa Group wherever possible.

The airline's commitment to sustainability includes continuous investment in ever more efficient, economical and quiet aircraft, the company says. It also ran the world's first long-term test of biofuel in regular flight operations in 2011.

A number of the world's airlines came together in 2008 to form a trade organization, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG). The group – the members of which represent 33% of commercial aviation fuel demand, including Lufthansa – says the aviation industry is committed to achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020, and that a key strategy to reach the goal will be the use of sustainable aviation biofuels.

The global aviation industry produces about 2% of all human-induced CO2 emissions, according to the Air Transport Action Group.
