The Rogers Centre sporting and entertainment complex in Toronto estimates that it is saving more than $300,000 a year on energy costs by using a smart lighting control system.
Prior to the lighting system retrofit, the Rogers Centre spent about $4 million a year on electricity with lighting costs accounting for 50 percent of the bill.
The Rogers Centre, which spans around 12.7 acres, consists of approximately 7,000 lighting fixtures that cover an area of 1.4-million square feet. With a target of reducing overall lighting energy consumption by 50 percent, the Centre's facility management opted for "intelligent lighting technology" from Encelium Technologies Inc. in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
The Encelium system was selected due to its integrated offering of motion, light and sound detectors, together with enabling operators to monitor and control lighting from a single desktop interface via the Internet.
