Lhyfe Leads Europe in Certified Green Hydrogen Production

New RFNBO certifications push Lhyfe to 21 MW across four sites

French hydrogen company Lhyfe has officially become the largest producer of certified renewable hydrogen in Europe. This comes after the firm achieved RFNBO certification—Europe’s strictest sustainability standard—for three additional production sites, increasing its certified capacity to 21 MW across four facilities located in France and Germany.

The RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) certification is part of the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive III and verifies that hydrogen is produced entirely from renewable energy sources. It’s also a prerequisite for companies looking to qualify for European sustainability funding or demonstrate taxonomy-aligned operations.

Lhyfe’s newly certified facilities include two 5 MW plants in Buléon and Bessières—currently the largest certified hydrogen production sites in France. The company’s Bouin facility, a 1 MW operation directly connected to a wind farm, holds the distinction of being the first RFNBO-certified hydrogen site in the country. In Germany, Lhyfe operates a 10 MW plant in Schwäbisch Gmünd, now the second-largest RFNBO-certified site nationwide.

Together, these facilities have the capacity to produce up to 8.3 tons of green hydrogen per day, enabling Lhyfe to supply industrial customers across multiple markets with certified, renewable hydrogen for transport and industrial use.

Decentralised Infrastructure Key to Commercial Viability

Lhyfe’s operational model prioritizes regional distribution over centralized production, enabling more efficient delivery and stronger local market integration. The company currently manages a fleet of nearly 70 Type 4 hydrogen transport containers, one of the most advanced and extensive in Europe, supporting bulk and modular delivery strategies.

This distributed production model reduces delivery distances and associated costs while allowing the company to serve diverse sectors—from transportation to heavy industry—without significant logistical delays. It also aligns with broader European objectives and localized renewable energy generation.

CEO Matthieu Guesné noted that achieving full RFNBO certification across multiple sites validates Lhyfe’s commercial and technical approach.  "In the current context, our concrete achievements are the most credible proof of the seriousness of our beliefs and ambitions. We are proud to continue leading the way and accelerating the development of renewable hydrogen in France and Europe, ultimately contributing to our decarbonisation and energy sovereignty.”

By proving that large-scale, renewable hydrogen production is not only feasible but scalable, the company positions itself as a critical enabler of the continent’s decarbonization plans.

RFNBO certification also opens the door for Lhyfe’s customers to access national and EU-level grants and incentives designed to support clean energy projects, providing a regulatory edge in an increasingly compliance-driven landscape.
