LG Chem Power will integrate six large-scale batteries at STEAG power plants in Germany, according to LG.
The release says that the deployment will be part of the largest energy storage system project in the world. The plants are in the North-Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate regions. The storage systems offer 140 MW of power and can supply power to 10,000 households daily.
The systems – lithium-ion batteries with 90 MW of capacity -- will be commission in STEAG plants in Herne, Lünen, Duisburg-Walsum, Bexback, Fenne and Weiher beginning in the middle of next year. The project will be completed during the beginning of 2017.
Batteries are an increasingly valuable asset due to their ability to store energy produced by renewables. Last month, the Temecula Valley Unified School District in California said that it soon will get most of its electricity from on-campus solar panels and batteries. The news, originally reported at Inside Climate News, said that SolarCity is installing 20 solar arrays and five storage batteries across the district’s 19 schools and the administration building.
