The LEGO Group is closer to reaching its goal of using 100 percent renewable energy by 2020. Kirkby, a holding and investment company that owns 75 percent of the LEGO Group, has invested about $456 million to construct of an off-shore wind farm in the German North Sea.
The first turbines have started delivering power into the mainland electricity grid. When all 78 wind turbines have been commissioned, the wind farm will be capable of generating up to 312 MW of electricity.
The Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm is located 33.5 miles off the coast and 23 miles north of the island of Borkum. It will be operated from DONG Energy’s harbor facility in Norden-Norddeich, Germany. Kirkby owns 31.5 percent of the wind turbines’ total production.
In 2013, LEGO Group entered into a Climate Savers partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The company has, among other things, committed itself to balancing its CO2 emissions in metric tons by 2016 through ownership and production of renewable energy and by increasing its energy efficiency.
In the last five years, the LEGO group has achieved a 50 percent increase in energy efficiency.
