Lee College in Texas has entered into an energy savings performance contract with Johnson Controls. The retrofit is expected to reduce energy usage and utilities bills by more than 30 percent, CSRwire reports.
The retrofit involves a new building management system and the installation of energy efficient HVAC and lighting products. When complete, the project is expected to reduce electricity consumption by about 35 percent. Energy and water costs should be reduced by 32 percent.
Lee College is the first higher education institution to sign such a contract under the Clinton Climate Initiative.
Last summer the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education noted that in 2007 at least 25 campuses posted hiring announcements for sustainability directors, managers, and coordinators, up from 11 in 2006.
