LEED energy manageFurniture company La-Z-Boy's new world headquarters has been awarded Silver Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design by the U.S. Green Building Council, according to Home Furnishings News. The facility was completed in March.

The building is 200,000 square feet, including a three-story glass lobby with natural lighting. The facility, which was designed by Rudoph/Libbe, includes exterior aluminum screens on the entry façade to filter light before it reach the glass and programmable solar shades controlled by rooftop sun sensors. The data center features a geothermal system with 252 wells that are in bedrock 400 feet underground and equipment, LED lights and security systems that are controlled by mobile devices.

Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL, in 2011 was the first public high school in the United States to get LEED certification for an existing building, according to The Daily Herald. In an effort to retain that status, the school during the past year has recycled 210 pounds of crushed fluorescent light bulbs; decreased electricity use by more than 2 percent and reduced production of recycled and non-recycled waste by more than 10 percent. Cannon Design is up for a $71,400 contract to aid in recertification.

The school says that the desire for LEEDs certification has led to annual energy savings of about $100,000. The school is considering updates to the HVAC system that would cost $38,487.
