The International Metals Reclamation Company (Inmetco) has achieved ISO 14001 certification for the environmental management system at its Elwood City, Pa., facility.
Inmetco operates what it says is the only secondary smelter in North America dedicated to recycling nickel, chromium and other metals from hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, generated mostly by stainless steel and specialty metals producers. Inmetco also processes nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, and its process has been recognized by the U.S. EPA as the Best Demonstrated Available Technology for the recycling of NiCd batteries. Inmetco is a subsidiary of Horsehead Holding Corp.
Nasdaq-listed Canadian Solar has achieved certification under both ISO 14001 and REACH, the European directive for registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals.
The company has it has implemented mechanisms for the continuous improvement of processes evaluated by the ISO standard. It has also met REACH requirements for its CS6 modules, proving that the modules are free from substances of very high concern (SVHC).
Hobas Pipe USA has achieved the ISO 14001 certification for the development, production, sales and customer service of centrifugally cast fiber-reinforced polymer mortar pipes. The Houston-based company manufactures large-diameter pipes in sizes from 18 to 110 inches.
Alberta Fire Safety and Security Ltd, a member of the Alberta Group, has been awarded the ISO 14001:2004 global certification by Bureau Veritas. Alberta designs, manufactures, installs and maintains fire, safety and security products in the construction, oil and gas, banking, health, hospitality and other sectors.
The Gerdau Ameristeel mill in Knoxville, Tenn., was awarded ISO 14001 recertification, renewing a standard it first achieved in 2007. During the ISO certification process, the Gerdau Ameristeel team analyzed plans for emergency preparedness, environmental policy and safety procedures and opportunities for new environmental programs.
The process also included an extensive review by independent auditors who assessed compliance through document review, observation and employee interviews, the company said.
Swiss sensor company Sensirion has achieved ISO 14001 certification. The company makes reduction of energy consumption a core plank of its environmental policy, and also focuses on the safe handling of chemicals, according to EHS manager Serena Filipuzzi.
Demaur Independent Paper has received ISO 14001 certification for all five of its operating sites in the U.K., after an audit by Bureau Veritas. The company also has ISO 9001, FSC and PEFC accreditations.
"Our EMS works on the principle of continuous improvement,” environmental manager Danny Doogan said. “This means that we will review our targets and objectives each year so as to impact less on the environment."
