The Internal Revenue Service has contracted with PC Recycler to recycle about 335,000 pieces of electronic data storage devices, and destroy the data contained on them, reports Environmental Protection.
The contract will result in about 100,000 pounds of recyclable materials, including metal and plastic scraps.
PC Recycler uses a 4,000-pound, dual-shaft shredder to pummel or shred up to 1,000 pounds of material an hour. That equals about 500 standard hard drives.
The IRS is required to destroy devices to NIST Special Publication 800-88 standards, which require that all residual magnetic, optical, or electrical representation of data be deleted in a completely irrecoverable and irretrievable way.
In other electronic device news, April 5-11 is EPA’s “Plug-In To eCycling National Cell Phone Recycling Week.”
In concert with that effort, Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and other cellular players are promoting their cell phone recycling services.
