Intertek has launched a carbon offset program that allows its customers to offset carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions for its auditing services in China. The China program kicks off a staged global roll-out across all its services.
The global provider of quality and safety services says the program is designed to make it easier for its customers to meet their environmental goals when using Intertek services. The program will enable its customers to measure and offset the carbon dioxide (CO2) generated through their use of Intertek’s services.
"Now we will provide a report and certificate showing the emissions generated through our auditing work and give them an immediate option to offset those. As the only major global testing, inspection and certification company to offer carbon offsets for our services, we think it is an innovation that some clients will value," says Wolfhart Hauser, Intertek Group's CEO.
The carbon-offset program measures all direct and indirect energy sources used in servicing the client including the travel, transport, energy and accommodation used by Intertek. Customers that are using the company's auditing services in China can register for the offset program at www.intertek.com/carbon-offset.
Customers will receive a certificate stating their offset net emissions, monetary value and offset project summary. Intertek is using Eco Securities-Climate Care to provide the monetization and portfolio of offset projects, which include renewable energy, biomass, methane power generation and agriculture projects.
In a report released by Point Carbon in December last year, it indicates that nearly a third of carbon offset projects don’t live up to their stated expectations.
Intertek says these projects meet global standards including UN Clean Development Mechanism, Voluntary Carbon Standard, Climate Action Reserve and Gold Standard.
Over the past year several businesses including Alamo Rent A Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car National Car Rental, and Xcel Energy have launched carbon offset programs.
