India's Supreme Court has ordered industrial facilities there to quit operating near bodies of water unless they have effluent treatment plants that treat sewage and industrial wastewater. They must still be given proper notice. The aim is to bring down water pollution levels.The Hindustan Times is reporting that said that bench there has directed the state pollution control boards to ensure that all industrial units verify their actions -- that they have indeed set up such wastewater treatment plants. The boards will furthermore have to carry out inspections to check on the status of the situation.
