Ikea energy manageIKEA this week said it is putting the largest single-use solar energy system atop a commercial building in Nevada on its store in Las Vegas, which is slated to open next summer.

The press release says that the installation will begin during the winter and be completed this spring.

The store itself is huge: It will be 351,000 square-feet in size and have 1,300 parking spaces. The solar panel will be 240,504 square-feet and will produce about 1.75 million kWh of electricity annually.

IKEA, which has retained Helix Electric for the project, has 42 other solar installations in the United States, which is almost 90 percent of its locations in the country. Worldwide, it has more than 700,000 solar panels installed and owns about 300 wind turbines. The release says that 104 of the turbines are in the U.S.

IKEA is also a player in fuel cells. In July, the company activated a fuel cell in its retail location in Emeryville, CA. That project, the company said, is its first effort to use fuel cells to convert biogas into electricity.
