IBMIBM today announced a goal to reduce CO2 emissions associated with its energy consumption 35 percent by year-end 2020 against base year 2005, adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures.

This new target, announced at the White House roundtable on greenhouse gas reductions, is the company’s third GHG emissions goal and represents an additional 20 percent reduction from year-end 2012 to year-end 2020 over the reductions achieved from 2005 to 2012.

In addition, the company has set a new goal to buy renewable sources for 20 percent of its annual electricity consumption by 2020.

From 1990 to 2005, IBM avoided 3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, or 40 percent of its 1990 emissions, according to Wayne Balta, IBM vice president, corporate environmental affairs and product safety.
