Deloitte, IBM and Logica stand out as the most capable companies in sustainable technology services, according to a report by analyst firm Verdantix.
The study of the 15 largest global IT services firms, with combined revenues of $324 billion, evaluated companies’ capabilities in areas including energy efficiency, renewable energy, intelligent transport, electric vehicles, carbon and energy management software, climate change risk modeling and smart grids.
Verdantix conducted in-depth interviews with 15 senior IT buyers in the private and public sectors, sent suppliers a 49-point questionnaire, and interviewed leaders from 13 of the 15 evaluated suppliers.
The analysts found that while buyers are still looking for traditional building and data center energy efficiency, they are increasing seeking intelligent transport and climate change risk assessment systems.
The study said that buyers value Deloitte, IBM and Logica for their visionary leaders, deep expertise, broad portfolios and records of big project wins.
Deloitte leads the market in energy and carbon management software, sustainability reporting services and lifecycle assessment, the report said. IBM appeals for its water management and data center efficiency offerings, while Logica’s stand-out projects have included electric vehicle infrastructure, energy efficiency and renewable energy management systems.
The study also found that Orange Business Services offers strong fleet management and telemetry services, while HP has an innovative flight planning service.
The report also evaluated Accenture, Atos Origin, BT Global Services, Capgemini, CSC, Fujitsu Services, Hitachi Consulting, Infosys, TCS and Wipro.
Report author Stuart Neumann said the results show that sustainable IT needs are changing.
“Our research found that large multi-nationals and city leaders want IT support for new sustainability initiatives such as electric vehicle infrastructure, offshore wind farms and global carbon management systems,” Neumann said. “Technology investment in these new areas is much larger than spend on green IT projects like data centre energy efficiency and PC power management.”
He added: “Technology services firms rooted in outmoded green IT thinking are already losing out on multi-million dollar contracts.”
Last November Verdantix ranked companies in the carbon and energy software market. The top ten were CA Technologies, CarbonSystems, Enablon, Enviance, Hara, IHS, ProcessMAP, SAP, TRIRIGA and Verisae.
