Honeywell, Metabolix to Develop Biodegradable Ingredients for Personal Care Products

Posted

Honeywell logoBiomaterials company Metabolix and Honeywell have partnered to develop biodegradable biopolymers for use in cosmetics and personal care products.

The new biobased microbeads can replace their synthetic, non-biodegradable plastic counterparts, which have been found in large quantities in the Great Lakes. Legislation is pending to ban microbeads.

Using applicable ASTM test methods, the marine biodegradability of Mirel PHA biopolymers has been shown to be similar to that of cellulose and paper, and is faster than other commercially available biodegradable polymers, the companies say.
