Honeywell Green Jet Fuel produced from UOP’s renewable jet fuel process will power 200 commercial flights on GOL Airlines during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the company says.
The Honeywell Green Jet Fuel was made from inedible corn oil and used cooking oil. Each flight will use a blend of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel with petroleum-based jet fuel. UOP supplied nearly 92,000 liters of Honeywell Green Jet Fuel for the flights.
Compared with petroleum-based jet fuel, this biofuel will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 185 metric tons of CO2 over the course of the event based on life cycle analysis.
In other renewable jet fuel news, Delta Air Lines has partnered with the Virgin Group founder Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room to accelerate low-carbon jet fuel production worldwide.
Additionally, British Airways and biofuel producer Solena have announced plans to build a UK-based facility that will produce jet fuel from waste, REWmag reports. The plant will be operational in 2017 and will convert convert scrap paper, food scraps and garden waste into liquid fuel.
The renewable energy publication reports BA estimates 575,000 metric tons of post-recycled waste will be converted into 120,000 metric tons of liquid fuels using Solena’s integrated technology.
