Hollander Home Fashions committed to a zero-waste goal for its manufacturing operations by 2010, saying it's the first company of its size in its industry to make such a commitment.
Last year, the company launched a line of pillows made from post consumer materials which has helped the company keep more than 11 million pounds of plastic bottles annually out of landfills. Hollander is planning line extensions in mattress pads and comforters.
Hollander says every year it recycles more than 250,000 pounds of material used to package and ship the bales of fiber to the company. Recycling programs have also been expanded at the company's manufacturing plants to include corrugate, bale wrappings, plastic strapping, soda bottles, cans and paper.
The company reported that it has eliminated 4.2 million square feet of corrugate, and 2.3 million cubic feet of shipping space through new packaging techniques, which has cut the amount of truckloads used for product shipments by more than 400.
Hearst Corp. began implementing a zero-waste policy at its Manhattan headquarters in April.
