Two of Harrah's Las Vegas properties have been recognized for waste-cutting efforts that include recycling 75 tons of paper, 18 tons of plastic and nearly 13 tons of glass.
The two resorts, Bally's and Paris Las Vegas, were recognized by the EPA's WasteWise program with gold achievement awards, according to a press release.
As a part of joining the EPA WasteWise list, the Bally's-Paris team has been tracking recyclables. In 2008, the team recycled:
- 417 tons of cardboard
- 25,690 pounds of glass
- 36,745 pounds of plastic
- 20,800 gallons of recycled kitchen oil
- Nearly 150,000 pounds of paper
Harrah's has instituted other energy and water savings features at its Las Vegas properties, including an effort to have the Caesar's Palace property LEED certified.
As another example, a newly redesigned laundry facility in Las Vegas saves 72 million gallons of water a year while increasing capacity 40 percent.
Also in Las Vegas, restaurants at Harrah's resorts installed water filtration systems that eliminate the need for plastic water bottles.
Harrah's says it has been making progress across its global portfolio of resorts and properties with at least 110 conservation projects. Harrah's has put about $60 million into the efforts.
Throughout all properties, millions of light bulbs have been replaced with energy efficient lighting, saving more than 50 million kilowatt hours per year.
