Outpost Natural Foods, a consumer-owned cooperative in Milwaukee, is an EPA Green Power Partner that sources 100 percent of its store energy by purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs) from RePower Now. The REC provider gets its energy from a mix of solar, wind and hydropower, all from small producers within the state of Wisconsin.
Outpost is striving to reduce its carbon footprint to half of what it was in 2012 by 2022.
In other efforts, Outpost reclaims its waste heat and uses it to heat its water. It also replaced all lightbulbs with LEDs and uses daylighting.
The company is applying for a Focus On Energy incentive grant from the State of Wisconsin that will allow it to put solar panels at its newest store location in Mequon. That system will provide about 20 percent of the company’s overall energy needs.
