SolarCity has completed the installation of a dual-array, 1,502-panel solar power system that will power GreenWaste Recovery's Material Recovery Facility in San Jose, California. The 1.8-acre solar panel system is said to be one of the largest commercial installations in the city of San Jose.
GreenWaste's new facility is capable of sorting, recovering and recycling 85 percent of household waste. By using clean, renewable energy to power its operations GreenWaste can further reduce its carbon footprint, air pollution and dependence on fossil fuel, said the company.
The 300 kilowatt (DC)-rated solar arrays are expected to produce approximately 408,000 kilowatt-hours of zero-emission solar electricity annually, enough to power approximately 40-50 area homes.
Solar designer and installer SolarCity financed the system for GreenWaste through a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). SolarCity's PPA allows GreenWaste to put zero money down and lower its annual electricity costs.
SolarCity also played a role in eBay's 650-kilowatt solar installation in 2008, which is claimed as the largest commercial installation in San Jose. The system consists of 3,248 individual solar panels spanning 60,000 square-feet on multiple buildings.
