GreenLight Pallet Co., the manufacturer of a corrugated pallet system, is moving its UNIPAL Pallet manufacturing system and equipment to Oregon from its current production in Korea and Spain. The company says this will reduce the carbon footprint for itself and its customers.
The company plans to complete the 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on Marine Drive along the Columbia River in Portland this May. The move could bring an estimated $250 million to Oregon's economy.
GreenLight’s patented UNIPAL Pallet weighs a quarter of the weight of a wood pallet and repels water. It can also be made from 100 percent recycled cardboard and is 100 percent recyclable at the end of its lifespan.
Other companies are making pallet choice a part of their sustainability process. Cole's Quality Foods has switched to reusable Chep pallets instead of one-way pallets.
And Wal-Mart Stores tested natural fuel-cell-powered pallet trucks.
