cell phone image2As more and more companies and organizations develop mobile phone applications that are centered on energy efficiency and the environment, the market for such downloads could exceed 400 million by 2014, according to Juniper Research.

Such a high rate of downloads would be predicated on the full exploitation by application stores of what Juniper calls "ecozones," or areas dedicated to "green-themed" mobile content and apps, according to the Green Handsets Whitepaper.

Without high promotion of such ecozones, there will be a lower level of awareness by end users, resulting in download levels of just 192 million by 2014, according to a press release.

One such company to promote green mobile phone apps is T-Mobile, USA, Inc., which in June unveiled a mobile application that offers discounts on “environmentally conscious” products and services. Available for download, the free-of-charge “Green Perks” application brings customers green-oriented offers and promotions from advertisers that include Method, Jamba Juice, Volcom, Roxy and Quiksilver.
