The company recently announced that it is adding what it claims is the world’s largest rooftop solar power installation to a car assembly plant in Spain.

The White Marsh installation will generate about 1.4 million kWh of energy and displace about 20 percent of the plant's current power purchase.

Under an agreement with SunEdison, the solar energy services provider will finance, install, operate and maintain the system.

The system is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2009, and will consist of more than 8,700 solar panels on about 300,000 square feet of roof space.

GM is one of ten automakers committed to a EcoDriving program launched by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturer. It is also partnering up with utilities to speed up the commercialization of plug-ins.
